How I Found Relief: A Nurse’s Journey Into CBD and the Science That Changed Everything
How I Found Relief: A Nurse’s Journey Into CBD and the Science That Changed Everything
By Alice Mangan, RN
For years, I lived in pain.
I was diagnosed with multiple autoimmune disorders—fibromyalgia, thyroid issues, carpal tunnel, IBS, degenerative disc disease, and narcolepsy, just to name a few. My days were filled with medications, symptoms, and side effects. The VA gave me everything they could. I had access to the full range of pharmaceuticals, but nothing really worked. And I’m not the only veteran who’s felt that way.
Eventually, I found myself living between my couch and my bed, barely functioning. The pain, the fatigue, the depression—it was all too much. I was exhausted, physically and emotionally, and I knew I couldn’t keep doing things the same way.
That’s when I was given an opportunity that changed my life.
Discovering the Science Behind Cannabis
In 2017, I was selected to attend a cannabis medicine program in Colorado. There, I met with researchers and scientists who were at the forefront of cannabinoid research. These were not people looking for loopholes to get high—they were digging into real data, studying real biology, and uncovering real answers.
I had never seen cannabis framed like this before. It wasn’t recreational—it was medicinal. Scientific. And for me, it was life-changing.
Why CBD Made Sense to Me—As a Nurse and a Patient
I’ve worked in healthcare since my military days. I'm trained to look for answers inside the body. So when I learned about the endocannabinoid system—a system we all have that regulates things like mood, sleep, inflammation, digestion, and immunity—it finally started to make sense.

My body wasn’t just broken. It was depleted. Deficient in the natural molecules it needed to function.
People are often surprised when I tell them the “runner’s high” doesn’t come from endorphins. It actually comes from a molecule called anandamide—our body’s version of THC. But when you’re depleted, like I was, you don’t get that high. You get more fatigue. More burnout. More pain.
When I started using CBD, things began to shift.
I wasn’t using opiates or sleeping pills.
I wasn’t relying on stimulants to stay awake.
I wasn’t constantly battling my body just to make it through the day.
And the best part? I was clear. I wasn’t stoned. I wasn’t foggy. I was just finally myself again.
Understanding the Power of CBD, CBG, and CBC
There’s a whole world of cannabinoids out there, and it’s not just about THC.
CBD became my foundation. It’s non-psychoactive, supports every cell in the body—even down to the DNA—and helps maintain balance.
CBG and CBC also play powerful roles. They’re showing real promise in areas like inflammation, brain health, and even cancer support. I’ve seen firsthand how families are using these tools alongside (or sometimes in place of) traditional treatment, especially in pediatric cancer care.
I’m not here to make wild claims. I’m here to tell you what the science says—and what I’ve lived through myself.
CBD for Health—Not a High
There’s still a lot of stigma around cannabis. I get it. I was skeptical, too. But I’m telling you: CBD for autoimmune issues, for pain, for fatigue, for anxiety—it’s not just possible. It’s powerful.
You don’t have to get high to get better. You don’t have to give up your clarity to gain relief. And you don’t have to keep living in pain because traditional medicine hasn’t worked for you.
